◎简　　介
影片主人公婚后同妻子感情不融洽。他是个业余画家，画商们认为他有点才气。在偶然机遇中，他结识了一名妓女。他把自己的钱全部给了妓女。为了满足她的要求，甚至撬开了老板的保险柜。而婊子的杈杆贪得无厌，仍然不断盘剥他。小职员发现了幕后的杈杆，与妓女发生争执。争执中，用裁纸刀失手杀死情妇。杈杆被捕，并被确认为杀人凶手，送上断头台。此后，小职员流落街头，沦为乞丐。但是，他却竭力帮助一个贫困的少女，直到他本人被捕判刑。
◎幕后制作
雷诺阿的第二部有声片，是一部把婚姻描写成监狱的作品，导演自己的婚姻因本片的选角而破裂。雷诺阿采用大量景深镜头交代当时巴黎郊区的环境和平民百态，使影片的主角性格丰满生动，从此雷诺阿的创作风格偏向现实主义。马里斯在拍摄完成后不久死于车祸。1945年由弗烈兹·朗重拍成《血红街道》（Scarlet Street），但评价不如本片。
