贝多芬第九交响曲《合唱》,D小调,OP.125
完成於1824年2月,1824年5月7日在维也纳首演。当时贝多芬失聪无法考虑担任指挥,他坐在乐队中,演出结束时,掌声雷动,他都没有知觉。这部作品是贝多芬最伟大的交响曲,它包括四个乐章。
完成於一八二四年,贝多芬的第九号「合唱」 交响曲,不仅为交响曲的创作立下了历史的里程碑,也为贝多芬自己的一生划下最完美的总结。无论是第三号交响曲的英雄气概、第五号交响曲的命运气息,或是第七号交响曲的积极肯定,贝多芬交响曲中所有惊人的戏剧特质,都融合在其中。
「合唱」的创作概念来自席勒(Schiller)的诗「快乐颂」。在经过十多年的酝酿后,贝多芬首次大胆地将合唱曲的部份写在交响曲中,并以「快乐颂」为歌词,安排在第四乐章中。当年在维也纳首演时造成极大的轰动,而距离贝多芬亲自指挥首演,已经过了七年。这时贝多芬已经完全失聪,但还是坚持亲自上台指挥,不过幸好另有一位指挥在暗中协助。结果演出相当成功,观眾以如雷的掌声向这位伟大的音乐家表达最深的敬意,然而他却浑然不知,眾人只得以白手帕向他挥手致意。
